Selection Criteria
We will use a holistic admissions standard that focuses on the achievements of students inside and outside of debating contextualized to the resources they have access to and their ages. To be clear, we still place heavy emphasis on debating achievements or academic achievements, but understand that students have unequal access to resources. We plan to consult members of the debating community globally to fill in circuit specific knowledge gaps such that we can judge each application fairly.
Ultimately, we understand that many applications will be rejected and many fellowships tend to say this, but we want to be clear that for debaters who are not selected it is most certainly not a judgment on your character or abilities. Applications are only a snapshot of your potential at this one instance not your life. Your value as a debater and more importantly as a person can never be fully captured in an application. We are imperfect in our decisions and limited by the resources at hand and hope to be able to expand this program going into the future. Please do not be discouraged from applying in the future or debating at large if rejected!
